Is a German Shepherd the Breed for me?
The German Shepherd Dog (GSD, also known as an
Alsatian), is a breed of large-sized dog that originated
in Germany.

German Shepherds were bred specifically for their
intelligence, they have the ability to learn simple tasks
very quickly, and as working dog where developed
originally for herding sheep, coupled with their
strength, intelligence and abilities in obedience training,
his trait makes the breed desirable as police, military,
guard, and search and rescue dogs.

Their loyal and protective nature is a trait for which
they are now renowned, the German Shepherd is one
of the most registered of breeds.  German Shepherds
are highly active dogs, and need huge amounts of
mental stimulation and are described in breed standard as self-assured.

Types of Coat?
German Shepherds sport a double coat. The outer coat,
which is shed all year round, (the only down side to
owning a GSD!) is close and dense with a thick
undercoat. The coat is often in two variants; medium
and long.  The correct coat is reasonably short with
obvious undercoat.

However the Long Coated GSD is extremely popular
with Pet owners, but it is considered a fault and they
can not be shown in UK or Germany, under UK  SV
rules, due to the fact with the lack of undercoat, it
makes the coats less weatherproof!

There is no proof that Long coats shed more than a
normal coated GSD, personally I believe there is no
difference,  however due to the length of the hair more
combing is required, but I have to say they are
beautiful, and they generally know it!!

Male v Female?
This is the age old debate, your personal preferences,
circumstances at home and experience,  here obviously apply.

Males - generally are larger in size, max 65 cm,  are
attentive and are usually very loving and loyal, they
are comical, and fun, and usually very attached to
their special person. However they can be dominate,
and strong willed, experience and a firm approach to
training is my best advice.

Females - size max 60 cm - are generally less lightly to
be dominate, but will also try and get their own way,
using whatever resources are available to them! They
are normally very loving, and gentle, but can be
independent and almost aloof.

Females however are generally the leaders in any dog
pack, and it is usually two females that will have a fall
out!   A female will to come into season, twice a year,
and then can be moody or emotional, this lasts for 3
weeks.
So you think that you’d like a GSD Puppy . . .
There is no doubt about it, owning a dog will change your life!

Ask anyone who has welcomed a puppy into their family and you’ll
be regaled with stories full of pleasure, pride, unconditional love
and devotion, and let’s be honest, a few hilarious (maybe alarming)
tales as well!  Life as a dog owner, like life itself, is full of
unexpected joys and surprises.

Are you prepared???
You may well have seen a litter of gorgeous cute cuddly little
bundles, or you may have wanted a German Shepherd all of your
life,  or fallen in love with some one else’s.   Now is the time for
reflection…

PLEASE ask yourself do you have enough time and patience to care
for the puppy?

REMEMBER he/she will grow and will be part of your life for the
next ten or so years.    It’s a bit like having a baby; you clean, feed
and teach until the puppy is socially trained and educated. You then
gain the mutual rewards enjoyed by both dog & Owner.
Note: Puppies do not become automatically housetrained, nor do
they know how to behave; this is all up to YOU!
Any dog, especially a German Shepherd, which is untrained and
unsociable, is at best a nuisance, and at worst a danger.
You have been warned!

A puppy won’t need many time consuming walks whilst
young, but will need vital puppy, & human socialisation
visits & needs a great deal of mental stimulation with trips
out. Later he/she will need exercise/walking, whatever the
weather and whatever you feel like…

How long are you away from home during the Day?
If the answer to this question is the majority of the day,
then a dog, especially a GSD is NOT the pet for you.
German Shepherds are known for their intelligence and
thrive being with their families and love company, with
plenty of stimulation.

DO you have the time to spend with your dog?
Dogs that are left home alone, often amuse themselves
by destroying the place that they have been left in, or
barking to protest and annoying your neighbours.
A puppy is going to need four meals per day to start,
coupled with lots of essential training and socialisation,
only then they can only be left for short times.

Finally, can you afford to own a dog?
Firstly the initial purchase price, and required
equipment, followed by Health Checks, Vaccinations and
Insurance, then on a regular basis; food, worming and
veterinary treatments, boosters, kennel fees and then
again even more food!

MEGAMAX SPECIFIC’s
A great deal of planning and time and effort goes into each litter, and we are not prepared to comprise our
standards or practises, and we want to ensure that every MEGAMAX German Shepherd Puppy has the best
possible start in life, with this in mind, we work according to the following principles:-

MEGAMAX Puppies generally leave home/us between 7
and 8 weeks of age, before they bond to us, aiding the
settling in process.

MEGAMAX Puppies are born and lavisly reared indoors,
with other GSD’s as part of our family, with children
aged 17 and 3 years, ensuring the best possible start to
socialisation.

At MEGAMAX - A Puppy “toy” requested when you visit
the puppies, which is left with the puppies, and goes
home with your puppy, this acts as comfort, and aids
settling in your new puppy.

We expect to meet the whole family who will be
involved in the Puppys’ Life, we will not sell puppies
over the telephone or by email.
Puppy Party - This is arranged for each litter, and
attendance is found to be beneficial to owners and
puppies.

Life-long support and advice is always available. MEGAMAX Owners are encouraged to Call us, and of course
send us news and pictures for the every growing photo galleries!
